Are You Eligible for Solar Panel and Battery Storage Rebates? Here’s What Businesses Need to Know

Commercial solar panel installation is a practical option for BC businesses facing rising energy costs and increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint. BC Hydro now offers rebates for battery and solar energy systems on eligible commercial properties.

Rebates can reduce upfront costs and help businesses manage energy more efficiently while reducing electricity bills and environmental impact. This blog will help you understand if your business qualifies, what’s included, and how to take advantage of these solar and battery rebates.

Key Takeaways

  • Commercial solar installation in BC may qualify for rebates of up to $25,000 for solar and battery systems.
  • Projects must meet BC Hydro’s eligibility criteria, including safety standards and grid connection requirements.
  • Rebates are only available for new solar and battery systems installed after June 27, 2024, that meet program guidelines.

Why Solar and Battery Storage Matter for Businesses

The rising electricity costs and pressure to meet sustainability goals make solar power systems an attractive option for commercial buildings. By installing solar panels and energy storage, businesses can reduce operational costs and gain more control over energy consumption.

Clean energy aligns with British Columbia’s move toward net-zero emissions. This creates a path for businesses to contribute directly to carbon reduction targets. With abundant sunlight across much of BC, many properties are well-positioned to generate power efficiently and reliably while managing future energy costs.

What Is the BC Hydro Solar + Battery Incentive?

BC Hydro supports businesses ready to install solar PV systems and battery storage by offering significant rebates for eligible projects.

Commercial Solar System Rebates

Businesses can get up to $1,000 per kilowatt (kW) of installed generator capacity. This rebate is capped at 50% of the total installed solar panels cost (including labour and materials). The maximum rebate for solar panels is $25,000. Solar installations allow businesses to create their own energy, reduce reliance on the main grid, and achieve energy independence.

Battery Storage Rebates

Storing excess solar energy means your business can maintain operations overnight, on cloudy days, or during outages. Rebates for battery storage offer $500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of installed capacity, also capped at 50% of the total cost. Projects can receive up to $25,000 for battery systems ranging between 5 kWh and 100 kWh.

These offers are only available while funding lasts and require approval under BC Hydro’s Self-Generation Program.

Is Your Business Eligible?

Before starting the installation process, check your eligibility based on the project scope and equipment. The details below are your guide to eligibility criteria.

 Customers and Properties

Before anything else, you need to have a BC Hydro business account.

  • The rebates apply to commercial buildings connected to BC Hydro’s distribution system.
  • Projects must be located in British Columbia and must be grid-connected.
  • You’re a business customer paying Small, Medium, or Large General Service rates.

New construction projects and major retrofits may also qualify, as long as the solar solution is part of the final electrical service plan.

Installation

The total system size can’t exceed 100 kW. By applying, you agree to a possible new self-generation rate proposed to the BCUC in June 2024. If you’re already in the self-generation program:

  • No rebates for systems installed before June 27, 2024.
  • You can get rebates for new panels or batteries added after that date, as long as the full system meets requirements.
  • Upgrades that increase your system’s size may qualify for a rebate on the added capacity only.

Solar Panels

The solar array must be part of a grid-tied system capable of delivering AC electricity back to the utility grid.

  • Must be new, not previously installed in another home or property.
  • Should be purchased in Canada; products can be manufactured outside of Canada.
  • With a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification and a nameplate rating of no more than 100 kW.
  • Must also comply with CSA C22.2 No. 107.1:16 (R2021), CSA C22.3 No. 9:20 and CSA C22.2 No. 61730.
  • Panels should meet industry standards and must be installed by a qualified contractor like Abbotsford Solar Installation.

The system size must match the specific energy needs of the business. If you’re wondering how many solar panels are needed, that depends on your energy consumption and available roof or land space.

Note that you cannot replace an existing solar photovoltaic system. However, new solar panels added to an existing system will qualify.

Battery Storage Systems

Like the panels, the battery systems must be brand new and never used in another home or property. It should be powered by a renewable source like solar, wind, or hydro (defined by the Clean Energy Act). It cannot be replaced by an existing battery system.

Besides, the battery system must meet specific CSA safety standards, such as:

  • CSA C22.2 No. 107.1:16 (R2021), CSA C22.3 No. 9:20
  • Certified to CUL 1973 and CUL 9540
  • If installed in a living space, it must meet CUL9540A
  • Lithium-ion batteries need CUL 1642 certification

For systems over 100 kWh, check out the demand response program for businesses’ energy storage incentive. Both solar panels and battery systems must comply with BC Hydro’s technical standards and pass final inspections before rebates can be approved.

How to Apply for the Rebate

To receive these rebates, there’s a clear process businesses must follow:

Review the Requirements

Before purchasing or installing anything, go through the BC Hydro self-generation guidelines to confirm your solar and battery project meets eligibility. Only approved projects will qualify for the rebates.

Choose a Qualified Contractor

Work with a solar company experienced in commercial solar installations for small- or medium-sized businesses. While your contractor doesn’t need to be in the Alliance of Energy Professionals, they must be licensed and familiar with grid-connected solar PV systems.

Apply for Self-Generation Approval

Your contractor will help you apply for BC Hydro’s Self-Generation Program. Only projects that receive technical acceptance can proceed with installation.

Install the System

Once technical acceptance is confirmed, you can purchase and install your system. The installation must be done by a licensed professional.

Submit Final Inspection Documents

Submit all inspection and commissioning documents to BC Hydro. Once everything is approved and your system is connected to the main grid, your rebate application will be processed

Receive Your Rebate

If approved, expect payment within 30 to 45 business days. The total cost savings depends on your system size and energy production capabilities

Important Note: As of March 21, 2025, BC Hydro is no longer accepting PDF or paper applications submitted by mail, fax, or email. All self-generation applications must be submitted online through MyHydro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can businesses use net metering?

Yes, many businesses can take advantage of net metering. If a solar system produces excess energy, that extra power is sent back to the grid. In return, the utility company gives you credits that can help lower your electricity bill.

How efficient are commercial solar panels?

Most commercial solar panels have an efficiency between 15% and 25%. This means they convert 15–25% of the sunlight they receive into usable electricity. Efficiency depends on factors like panel materials, cell design, and local weather conditions.

Are US-made products like Tesla eligible for rebates?

Starting March 12, 2025, Tesla products will no longer qualify for rebates through CleanBC and BC Hydro. This change reflects the BC Government and BC Hydro’s efforts to prioritize Canadian-made products in their rebate programs and, where possible, limit the inclusion of U.S.-manufactured goods.
